Welcome

IXth International Conference on Lactoferrin (9th ILC) Structure, Function and Applications will be held in Beijing Friendship Hotel (Beijing, China) from October 18 to 22nd of 2009, it will be followed by the first Chinese Lactoferrin Conference (www.lactoferrin.net.cn) during 22-23rd, October 2009.

Lactoferrin is an extracellular iron binding glycoprotein that first identified in milk secretions and functions as a key component of the mammalian immune defense. The conference on lactoferrin structure, function and applications brings together individuals from academia, industry and government with diverse backgrounds and interests who share a common interest in the research of this fascinating glycoprotein and its potential applications. During the meeting, scientists from widely different fields will closely introduce the latest high-tech developments of lactoferrin and its derivatives and exchange of ideas extensively. It also provides the opportunity to identify the outstanding questions pertaining to the detailed mechanisms of action that need to be addressed in order to optimally exploit its therapeutic potential. Recently, lactoferrin has been introduced into infant formula because of its potential health effects as we know. The growing recognition of the potential benefits of lactoferrin in preventative and therapeutic applications has resulted in an increasing level of interest and participation by commercial companies.

History

The First two conferences on Lactoferrin were held in Hawaii, America in 1993 and 1995. The latest two conferences were held in Hawaii, America (2005) and Nice, France (2007) respectively. Particularly, the size of the conference has grown to about 150 participants in the 8th international lactoferrin (www.lactoferrin-conference.com/2007) conference held in Boscolo Plaza Hotel, Nice (France). Because all participants stayed at one venue, there was a high level of interaction and exchange among the researchers, manufacturers and salesmen from different disciplines, academia as well as industry in the world.

Concluding remarks from the VIII th Conference
(by Professor and Dr. Tony Schryvers, University of Calgary, Canada, unchecked by the speaker)

The International Conferences on Lactoferrin have been held biennially since 1993. Their primary goal is to bring together researchers representing different perspectives, and from different backgrounds, together with all those who are interested in the applications of this fascinating protein.

The VIIIth conference (www.lactoferrin-conference.com/2007) was successfully held in Nice, France, during 21-25 October 2007. Review lectures covering lots of aspects of lactoferrin and its antimicrobial peptides, gene regulation and expression, ligands interactions, signal transduction, cell proliferation and differentiation, immuno-modulating effects, recombinant and transgenic lactoferrins. Some notable features of this meeting included steady progress in characterizing lactoferrin receptors – at last we are beginning to understand its interactions with cells – and some very exciting applications to important aspects of human health. Prominent characters among these are immuno-modulatory and anti-inflammatory activities, regulation of cell cycle and apoptosis and growth-promoting activity. Finally, with bovine lactoferrin widely available through the dairy industry of a number of countries, and with human lactoferrin available from transgenic rice, transgenic cows and fungal expression, interest in its applications is growing rapidly.

Overall, this was an exceptionally good meeting. The venue and size (about 150 participants) allowed for easy interactions, over meals or at the poster sessions, and the combination of broad scientific underpinning, new discoveries, and applications makes a recipe for success.

Special thanks are due to the dynamic duo of Annick Pierce and Dominique Legrand, who organized the conference. We look forward eagerly to the next meeting in 2009.

----A Brief History of the Palace Museum
Established in 1925, the Palace Museum was installed in the imperial palace of two consecutive dynasties - the Ming (1368-1644) and the Qing (1644-1911). The magnificent architecture, also known as the Forbidden City, and the vast holding of the imperial collections of paintings, calligraphy, ceramics, and decorative objects make it one of the most prestigious museums in China and the world at large. In 1961 the imperial palace was designated by the State Council as one of China's foremost-protected cultural heritage sites, and in 1987 was made a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The Palace Museum Situated at the heart of Beijing, the Palace Museum is approached through the Gate of Heavenly Peace (Tian'an men). Immediately to the north of the Palace Museum is Prospect Hill (also called Coal Hill), while on the east and west are Wangfujing and Zhongnanhai neighborhoods. The location was endowed with cosmic significance by ancient China's astronomers. They correlated the emperor's abode, which they considered the pivot of the terrestrial world, with the Pole Star (Ziwei yuan), which they believed to be at the center of the heavens. Because of its centrality as well as restricted access, the palace was called The Forbidden City. It was built from 1406 to 1420 by the third emperor of the Ming dynasty, the Yongle Emperor (r. 1403-1420) who, upon usurping the throne, determined to move his capital northward from Nanjing to Beijing. The Ming dynasty fell to the Manchu Qing in 1644 and in 1911 the Qing dynasty was overthrown by the republican revolutionaries. The last emperor Puyi (ruled from 1909 to 1911 under the reign name Xuantong) continued to live in the palace after his abdication until he was expelled in 1924. During nearly six hundred years, twenty-four emperors lived and ruled from this palace.
The Forbidden City is surrounded by 10-metre-high walls and a 52-metre-wide moat…….,
